Over the years since the game was introduced, Rummy has changed, giving birth to several variations. Many of them have experienced a rise and decline in popularity, coming in and going out of favor. During this time, the collection of terms that are associated with Rummy has grown. Below, I’ve compiled a list of the most widely-used phrases and expressions for Rummy and its derivatives. The following Rummy glossary will help familiarize you with the game.

Aces High/Aces Low: Describes how Aces can be used within sets during a round. Aces high means that they can be used within a Q-K-A meld. Aces low means they can be used in an A-2-3 meld.

Book: A meld comprised of 3 or more cards with the same rank.

Contract: Melds that must be played before a player can end a hand. The term is typically used in Contract Rummy games.

Deadwood: Cards that remain in a player’s hand at the end of a round that do not form a meld and cannot by laid off.

Discard: The card that is placed facing up on the discard pile, signaling the end of a player’s turn.

Draw: To take a card from either the stock or discard pile.

Going Gin: Ending a round by using all cards in melds, by laying off, and discarding.

Knock Count: The greatest number of aggregate deadwood points a player may have when knocking.

Knocking: Ending a round when the deadwood points add up to less than the maximum deadwood allowed.

Laying Off: Playing cards on melds that have previously been played.

Meld: 3 or more cards that form a book or a set.

Round: A subset of the game. It begins with the initial deal. It ends when a player knocks.

Set: A meld comprised of 3 or more consecutively numbered cards within the same suit.

Stock: Portion of the deck that is placed facing downward after the round’s initial deal.

Target Score: The number of points agreed upon by all players that must be reached by a player in order to win the game.

Undercut: When a knocker’s deadwood is equal to or greater than an opponent’s deadwood after knocking.

Wild Card: A card that can be used in place of any other card within melds.
