Oklahoma Gin Rummy Rules

Played with 2 to 4 players, Oklahoma Gin Rummy is a popular variation of Gin Rummy. It requires 1 standard deck of cards without the Jokers. In 2-player games, each player receives 10 cards. If there are 3 or 4 players, 7 cards are dealt to each. The first player to deal is randomly chosen. From that point, the player who wins a hand deals the following hand.

How To Play

A stock pile is placed between the players after the initial cards are dealt. Before the hand officially begins, 1 card from the stock pile is turned facing upward and placed next to the stock. This is the discard pile. This first card also reflects the amount of deadwood points a player can have in his hand when knocking. For example, if the first card in the discard pile is an 8, the maximum number of deadwood points is 8.

Players take turns by drawing a card from the stock or discard pile and choosing another to discard. The hand progresses with each player trying to form melds. A meld consists of consecutive cards in the same suit (i.e. 2-3-4 of spades) or groups of like cards in different suits (i.e. K-K-K). Typically, players are not able to lay off (or play) cards until they’re ready to “go gin” or “knock.” Both are explained below.

How To Win

Going gin means that a player has used all of his cards (with the exception of the card he plans to get rid of) to form melds. When he discards his last card, the hand has ended. Knocking means that a player has formed melds in a manner that his unmatched cards (referred to as “deadwood”) add up to less than the value of the first card in the discard pile.

Whether a player goes gin or knocks with deadwood, the value of his opponents’ cards are totaled and added to his score. If he goes gin (that is, has no unmatched cards), he earns a 20-point bonus. In addition, his opponents cannot play the melds in their hand. By contrast, if a player knocks with deadwood, his opponents can play their melds, preventing the knocker from earning those points. His opponents can also lay off cards that build upon the knocker’s melds.

The game continues until 1 player reaches 100 points (or another target score agreed upon by the players).
