Michigan Rummy Rules
Unlike most Rummy games, Michigan Rummy uses betting chips and a special board that displays bonus cards. The board has 9 compartments (including a pot and kitty), each requiring 1 chip from every player with the exception of the dealer. The dealer places 2 chips in every compartment. The game uses 1 standard deck and all cards are dealt to the players. The dealer also deals a “dummy” hand.
The Dummy Hand
If the dealer’s hand contains no bonus cards, he can choose to exchange it for the dummy hand. Alternatively, the dealer can offer the dummy hand to other players, selling it to the player who bids the highest. However, a player is prohibited from bidding if his hand already contains 1 or more bonus cards. The winning bidder’s chips are kept by the dealer.
Hand Stages And Winning
Every hand is comprised of 3 stages: Hearts, Poker, and Michigan. The hand begins with the first player (to the immediate left of the dealer) playing a card in any suit. The only rule is that the card must be the lowest they hold in that particular suit. Then, the player who holds the next highest card in that same suit must play it. This continues until the next highest card is not found in any of the players’ hands. The person who played the most recent card now begins another sequence in any suit they select. But, as before, they must start with the lowest card they hold in their chosen suit.
If, during sequence play, a player is able to discard a card that matches one of the bonus cards displayed on the board, they collect the chips in the associated compartment. Also, if a player fails to play the next card in a sequence even though it is in his hand, he must give 1 chip to every other player. As a further penalty, he is prohibited from collecting chips for discarded bonus cards for the remainder of the hand.
Ultimately, each player’s goal is to get rid of every card they hold. In doing so, they collect the chips that sit in the jackpot compartment in the center of the board at the end of the hand. The winner is the player who has the most chips at the end of the game.
