How To Play Michigan Rummy

Michigan Rummy is unlike other Rummy games in that it uses a casino-style board and betting chips. 1 standard deck is used throughout the game and Aces are always high. Up to 8 players (including the dealer) can participate, though as few as 3 can play. Each round is actually comprised of 3 different games in various stages: Hearts, Poker, and Michigan. In this quick tutorial, you’ll learn how to play Michigan Rummy, including how to use the board, the chips, and when necessary, the dummy hand.

The Board, Betting, And The Dummy Hand

The board has nine sections, including 6 that show the bonus cards and 1 that shows a bonus 3-card sequence. There is also a kitty and a jackpot. At the beginning of each round, every player must place 1 chip in each of the 9 sections on the board. The dealer deals every card in the deck to the players as well as a dummy hand. It’s not uncommon for some players to have an additional card after the deal.

If the dealer’s hand does not contain a bonus card (again, they’re shown on the board), he has the opportunity to replace his hand with the dummy hand. His other option is to put the dummy hand up for bidding among the other players. Bids are only accepted by players whose hands also do not contain a bonus card. If the dummy hand is sold, that player pays the bid directly to the dealer.

Playing By Stages

Each round begins with players looking for bonus cards (or the bonus sequence) in their hands. If they have one, they can claim the chips from the corresponding sections of the board. The next stage is similar to Poker with each player choosing 5 cards from his hand on which to bet. After the Poker stage has been completed with either a showdown or all players but 1 folding, the third and final stage of the round begins.

In the third stage (called Michigan), the winner of the Poker stage leads off with a card in any suit he wishes. The lead card must be the lowest card he has in that suit. The player who has the next highest card in the same suit plays that card and so on. Eventually, the sequence ends when nobody can play the next highest card. At that point, the last player from the previous sequence starts a new sequence.

The player who is able to play his entire hand collects the chips from the kitty. He also collects chips from each opponent equal to the number of cards they’re still holding. Learning how to play Michigan Rummy is exciting, but the game can be addictive.
